Digital Signal Processing with Emphasis on Speech Processing Applications
Dr. Gowdy is founder and director of the Speech and Audio Processing Laboratory at Clemson.  He and his students have worked on numerous projects in the area of speech processing. The include projects on speech recognition, audio-visual speech recognition, speaker recognition, speech coding, speech synthesis, and analysis of foreign language sounds.  The CUAVE audio-visual speech recognition database developed in our laboratory is used world-wide by researchers in this field.
Dr. Gowdy's research has also included projects in detecting artifacts in rotating objects, and in real-time quality analysis of yarn evenness and in textile dying.
Dr. Gowdy served as ECE Department Chair from 1996 to 2007.  He previously served over ten years as Graduate Program Coordinator for the ECE Department.  He currently serves as Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Assessment Coordinator for the ECE Department.
