Dr. Poutous is the Senior Scientist that supervises the Micro-Photonics Laboratory, directed by Prof. E. G. Johnson. Before joining Clemson as a Research Associate, Dr. Poutous was Assistant Research Professor of Physics and Optical Science and, Senior Research Scientist at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2008-2012). Prior to that, Dr. Poutous was Principal Process Development Engineer at Digital Optics Corporation (2000-2007), where he conducted Research & Development of micro-optical devices, for applications in integrated electro-optic systems and illumination systems of photolithographic projection steppers/scanners. He held the position of Lecturer and Research Associate in the Dept. of Physics at Emory University (1993-2000), where he taught Physics and Optics courses in both the undergraduate and graduate levels. During his post-baccalaureate years he taught undergraduate Physics, as Adjunct Faculty, at Dekalb College (now Perimeter College, GA) and, Hunter College of the City University of New York (NY), continuously from 1988 to the year 2000. Dr. Poutous received his Doctorate from the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996, and his Masters and Bachelors degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University, in 1988 and 1984 respectively. He is a regular member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He has served as a program committee member and session chair at Photonics West SPIE Conferences, and by multiple invitations as a panel reviewer at the National Science Foundation (NSF). He periodically reviews article submissions for scientific journals. Dr. Poutous’ research interests are in diffractive micro-optical elements, photo-lithographic fabrication processes applied to wafer-scale micro-optics, and applications of micro-optics in laser cavities and devices. He has more than 30 publications and conference presentations in the field, and one issued patent. He has participated as a key member or co-investigator in funded research from DARPA, AFOSR and ONR.
