A Systematic Approach

Industrial engineers can be found in just about every sector of industry since their purpose is to help companies and government agencies operate effectively and competitively. IEs serve as engineering specialists who evaluate systems to improve their cost-effectiveness, enhance their reliability, and improve their safety. This could involve optimizing the layout and operations of a warehousing or production facility, developing software applications for use in healthcare or determining optimal schedules for sports leagues.

Optimize your future at Clemson while learning with award-winning student organizations, life-changing leadership opportunities, and hands-on global experiences.

Career Paths

Industrial engineers are in high demand in almost every industry. This is due to the technical expertise, hands-on problem-solving skills and keen understanding of industrial efficiency issues you will possess as a graduate. IEs work in a variety of industries, including automotive manufacturing, government agencies, hospitals and financial institutions. Students graduating from Clemson with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering are employed by some of the following corporations

  • BMW
  • General Electric
  • Bank of America
  • ExxonMobil
  • Fluor Corp.
  • Boeing
  • Microsoft

Katie Jurewicz alumni profile

“I have loved every moment of my experience in Clemson IE! I am so proud that I had the opportunity to be part of Clemson IE, and I wouldn't change a thing about my experience. My undergraduate and graduate experiences were not easy by any means and required a lot of work. I was successful because of the support of department faculty, staff, and my peers in IE.”

Significant Contributions

Adapting to Involving Needs

The Department of Industrial Engineering serves the State of South Carolina and the nation through teaching, research, and outreach in industrial engineering. A particular focus for industrial engineering at Clemson University is to be a nationally top-ranked industrial engineering department emphasizing the education, research, discovery and application of knowledge in technology-driven emphasis areas.

Sanders profile

“I used to be involved in CEDC, and this organization was impactful to me by opening my eyes to how I could impact people during my time at Clemson, even if I never got to meet or interact with them personally. Dr. Magagnotti has also been very helpful in and out of the classroom, and I'd almost go as far as to say that she gave me the pivotal advice that helped me secure the job offer I accepted after graduation.”

  • Clemson University Center for Workforce Development [NSF ATE]
  • The Zucker Family Graduate Education Center in Charleston

With continued growth in our student body, staff and faculty, top-notch educational facilities in Freeman Hall, and interdisciplinary research opportunities that its faculty have secured, IE has become a premier destination for students and researchers worldwide.

Steven Foster profile

“I love working with people and tackling problems that affect people in everyday life. As an engineering discipline, IE stood out as a field where I could directly impact the lives of others, specifically through healthcare. One of the most rewarding experiences I've had in IE was in my undergraduate capstone project, where I was able to evaluate a hospital's Sepsis detection capabilities and make recommendations for improvement. Interacting with nurses, physicians, patients, and staff enabled me to gain an appreciation for the complexity and importance of our healthcare systems and the role IE has to play in developing better healthcare for the future.”

Culture & Leadership

Making the World a Better Place

The College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences has dedicated faculty who promote inclusion and equity. Kapil Chalil Madathil is one of them. As a graduate student at Clemson, he worked as a lab assistant, exposing him to diverse perspectives and backgrounds as he worked with students from around the world.

Since becoming an associate professor, he has continued to create a welcoming environment for all students. He believes that DEI at Clemson involves "participating in and supporting campus-wide diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and events, and creating opportunities for students to engage with and learn from diverse communities."

The Future of Work

Exoskeletons could soon make ‘the future of work’ healthier and safer for manual laborers. These wearable devices help augment or restore users’ natural abilities, assisting in the prevention of injuries such as strained backs and shoulders.

Industry Simulations

Systems Design II, the senior capstone project, is the culmination of an IE student's career. It is a semester-long group project where students apply critical thinking and engineering training to client-supplied submissions. Two teams, one problem, and a final pitch presentation round out the competition to supply the best solution.
