Admission Requirements

There are many questions that students have during this process. Most of these questions can be answered by visiting:

All students must submit an official online application to the Clemson University Graduate School. Applicants can view the “Degree Seeking” webpages for information ranging from initial steps in setting up an online application to requirements for obtaining a visa and establishing residency.

  • PhD applications are considered for both Fall and Spring. The deadlines for Fall and Spring admissions are January 1 and September 1, respectively. Applications received afterwards will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
  • See the Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

If you are admitted

With very few exceptions, all students admitted to the PhD program will also be funded by the IE department, or will have funding from an external source (industry or government).  The offer response deadline will be April 15th, although quicker responses are always very useful. It is important for students to know that most American graduate schools have formally agreed to a uniform deadline of April 15th.  Clemson University is committed to upholding this agreement, and also to informing students of this resolution.

Tips on applying to Clemson IE's PhD program

In addition to test scores, the applicant must also submit transcripts, letters of reference, and a personal statement as part of the application. To apply for the PhD degree, a minimum of 2 letters of reference are required.

There are no minimum score requirements, but admitted Doctoral students typically have at least the following qualifications:

  • An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or above (on a 4.0 scale). Students with a Master’s degree typically have a GPA above 3.75 in their graduate courses.
  • Scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) that exceed 165 (old score of 700) on quantitative.
  • Scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) that exceed 100 (iBT) or 600 (PBT) for international students.

If the student’s performance on these measures is not consistent with the guidelines, it is important that the reference letters and the statement of purpose provide the graduate committee with additional information as to why the student should still be considered for admission to the IE Graduate Program.

Students must have at least a four-year bachelor’s degree from an institution whose scholastic rating is satisfactory to the University.
