Another successful semester is almost “in the books”. We have hosted multiple graduate recruiting events, some fun social events, and introduced and grew professional development programs such as the Graduate Seminar Series, the Fellowship Workshops, and Faculty Life Nights. Most importantly, we have 32 students graduating in December. This includes 3 PHD students (average time to completion is ~56 months), 20 MS thesis students (average time to completion is ~23 months), and 9 MS non-thesis students (average time to completion is ~19 months). Our graduate enrollment numbers are growing, an increase of 20% enrollment from last fall. We continue to welcome new faculty and expand our research. It is truly an exciting time to be an ME graduate student at Clemson.

Congratulations to all.

Remember to submit your GS2 in a timely manner.
For most students, the on-line GS2 is a two-step process. First, the GS2 Committee is submitted through iRoar. The second step is submitting the plan of study (courses/research) in iRoar.
For students working on a Thesis or Dissertation, please talk to the committee members before listing them in iRoar as your committee members. After the committee has been approved through all of the channels (Chair of Committee, Members of the Committee, Graduate Coordinator, Department Chair, College Dean, Graduate School) the GS2 Plan of Study can be submitted in iRoar. The GS2 Plan of Study will go through the same channels for approval. DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR RESEARCH HOURS (ME 8910 or ME 9910) on the Plan of Study.
New students who are going the Master’s Non-Thesis route, currently, your committee chair will be Dr. Joshua Summers. If you are able to automatically submit your Plan of Study in iRoar with Dr. Joshua Summers as your advisor, please go ahead and do so. If iRoar will not let you submit the Plan of Study, please see Trish Nigro in 102B EIB. The GS2 Plan of Study will go through Dr. Summers, Department Chair, College Dean, Graduate School.
If you change your committee, a new GS2 Committee Selection will need to be submitted in iRoar. Be sure you pick the correct committee type (Thesis, Non-Thesis or Dissertation) After the new committee is approved, a new GS2 Plan of Study will need to be submitted in order for the new committee to review/approve the plan.
If you change your courses, a new GS2 Plan of Study form will need to be submitted.
If you change from thesis to non-thesis or from non-thesis to thesis, you will need to submit a new GS2 Committee Selection and indicate the committee has changed to either thesis type or non-thesis type. You will also need to submit a new GS2 Plan of Study to reflect the new committee type along with the courses/research you will be taking. Do not list your research hours on the non-thesis GS2.

This semester was another successful one for the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Council and the ME department as a whole! MEGSC hosted 6 social events throughout the semester including playing Cricket, a Board game night, the Homecoming tailgate and a bowling night. We also had a Research Poster Competition which saw 20+ posters submitted allowing all to see the interesting research going on in the department. We have continued to participate in department committees to understand changes that are coming and provide student input to decision making bodies. MEGSC looks forward to the coming semester and hopes everyone has a good break!
