"A physics-based approach to the numerical simulation of particulate flows"

Particulate flows, such as fluidized beds, sand transport at the bottom of water bodies, sand storms and many others are important and widespread but very difficult to model. It is hoped that effective coarse-grained model can be developed on the basis of detailed direct numerical simulations, but the complexity of the problem requires very sophisticated numerical methods and computational implementations. The talk describes a physics-based approach to the problem with some considerations on its numerical implementation on GPU-based computers. An assortment of various applications will then be presented: a few particles in turbulence, spinning particles, flows past particle beds, and others. The particles are fully resolved and immersed in a Navier-Stokes fluid at finite Reynolds number.


Andrea Prosperetti is the Charles A. Mioller, Jr. Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He also holds the Berkhoff Chair in the Department of Applied Sciences at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Professor Prosperetti is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
