"Elliptical Vibration Texturing of Micro-Structured Functional Surfaces"

Micro-structured surfaces are assuming an ever-increasing role since they define the ultimate performance of many industrial components and products. Surface micro-structures, when carefully designed, can alter the optical, biological, tribological, and thermal properties of the original surfaces. The bottleneck of applying this new technology to commercial products is manufacturing efficiency. A novel vibration-assisted machining method has been developed for the fast generation of micro-structures, which could potentially be 100,000 times faster than conventional manufacturing methods. This talk presents the development of the process including its principles, device design, surface generation model, etc. Examples of its application in wettability control are also given to demonstrate the capability and versatility of the newly developed process.


Ping Guo is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, where he worked as a research assistant in the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory with Prof. Kornel Ehmann. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2009. He was the recipient of the Martin Outstanding Fellowship, the Walter P. Murphy Fellowship, and the Best Paper Award at the 8th International Conference on Micro-Manufacturing (ICOMM). His research interests lie in the paradigm of micro-manufacturing, with special focus on surface texturing and vibration-assisted machining.
