CU-CCMS Computing System Ranked Among the Top-100 Supercomputers Worldwide

November 17, 2008

The CU-CCMS HPC System is now ranked as the 99th most powerful in the world, according to the latest 'TOP-500' list of the world's most powerful computers.  The CU-CCMS system, known as 'AREV', is comprised of 430 SunBlade x6250 servers, containing a total of 3,440 Intel Xeon L5420 processors and over 13TB RAM.  A Voltaire Infiniband DDR interconnect provides communication at 20GB/s.  The system completed the Linpack performance benchmark at 27.3 Tflops, or over 27 trillon mathematical computations per second.  This places AREV among the top 10 most powerful computers at any American university, and among the top 20 computers at any university center worldwide.

"We appreciate the support of our incredible partners, who share our vision of creating the world's foremost computational engineering center," said Dr. James H. Leylek, Executive Director of CU-CCMS.  "Our long-term technology partners, SunMicrosystems and Voltaire, played a key role, as did the State of South Carolina in providing financial support.  Their efforts ensure we can expand and enhance the knowledge-based economy in South Carolina.  Finally, special thanks go to the Clemson University Trustees, and to Dr. C.E.G. Przirembel (Clemson University's VP for Research and Economic Development) for his vision and unwavering support."
