Laine's current research interests are focused on improved sensing and data analysis for manufacturing, flexibility in manufacturing systems, friction modeling, and its application to motion control.  His teaching interests are in manufacturing processes, both from qualitative and modeling standpoints, and data acquisition and analysis, particularly as applied to manufacturing optimization.  Laine has Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a BSME from Virginia Tech.  Laine has over 10 years' industrial experience in manufacturing engineering and engineering management.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer and ASQ Certified Quality Engineer.
