Goals

Overall: The main goal of CEI is to promote and assure the participation of faculty from many departments in research related to environmental issues. Participation is open to any department, faculty member, staff, researcher or student at Clemson University. Coordination and promotion with all interested faculty and related programs at Clemson University is critical. CEI is a university-wide effort. Consequently, implementing incentives and removing barriers to integrated cross-departmental activities are targeted. The goal is to facilitate and promote appropriate activities and to allow for ones that otherwise might not have occurred.

Communication Coordination: Provide a recognized and well-known central contact point for people inside and outside of Clemson University for environmental issues, especially as they relate to research.

Research, Development and Applications: Function as a resource for the university, government agencies and industry to provide practical solutions to environmental problems and to develop efficient and effective management options. Examples include:

  • Provide improved analytical capabilities to Clemson University researchers;
  • Implement a center for development and implementation of innovative technologies for environmental remediation and pollution prevention;
  • Establish and maintain an environmental analytical facility that will help acquire and will maintain state-of-the-art analytical equipment for leading edge environmental research; and
  • Provide appropriate routine analytical services (with certifications where appropriate), and develop cooperative arrangements with other analytical facilities.

Education: Work with academic units at Clemson University to facilitate environmental education. Integrate CEI activities with educational opportunities for Clemson students. Provide special educational services and certification, including non-traditional student groups. Be recognized as a model for interdisciplinary research and teaching.
