Celebrate minority health month, April 2009
on March 3, 2009
Preconception health is OMH's focus for Minority Health Month, April 2009, and we call on State and local governments and offices of minority health to organize events and put forth proclamations to bring due attention to the issue. This focus generates awareness of the high rates of infant mortality in African American communities and the importance of preconception health and care in its prevention. This theme will climax in September during National Infant Mortality Awareness Month.

Finally, a summit about minorities' health disparities
on March 3, 2009
Thousands of scientists, health care workers and policymakers, among others, convened at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, just outside Washington, D.C., for the first government-sponsored scientific summit on minority health and health disparities."This is the Academy Awards of health disparities," says John Ruffin, director of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), the National Institutes of Health center that coordinated the "Science of Eliminating Health Disparities" summit.

HRSA

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced the renewal of $7.2 million in annual operating grants to public and private agencies that act as the eyes and ears of the nation's rural health care system - which serves the most geographically isolated communities in the country.

Cures for an ailing system

Everyone in America should have health insurance that covers at least a basic level of care. This would give them access to medical services and ensure that health-care providers are paid. Improving access to care this way would actually slow the growth in health-care spending because people who become seriously ill.

Opening young eyes to a prize: a career in medicine

Amanda Rowley, a soft-spoken 11-year-old from Harlem, already knows what she wants to be: a heart surgeon. She got the idea a few years ago from watching the doctors on her favorite cable television shows. She is often surprised when she meets people who do not take her seriously.
