Day 1 - Begin 8:30am

8:30     Registration & Continental Breakfast
9:00     Presentations Begin

  • Program Preview
An explanation of the process of profiling, color management and the benefits to print production will be presented. Conventional and colorimetric color management technologies will be compared. The benefits of using a Color Managed System (CMS) strategy will be also presented.
  • The Essential Questions
The major elements for understanding color management tools are explained. This interactive session develops a model for color management implementation.
  • Benefits of a Colorimetric Workflow
The advantages of a CMS are illustrated: consistency, predictability, and reproducibility, all of which translate into profitability.

Noon     Lunch (provided)

  • Color Language
Color communication is simplified and easily accomplished when everyone involved in the color reproduction process understands color terminology and objectives. This presentation will examine the terms, tools and use of the ‘language of color’.
  • Standards and Specifications
The target is consistent, repeatable color reproduction. In order to accomplish this objective, CMS users must understand why and how standards and process specifications improve the production system and enable the implementation of a CMS.
  • Live demonstration of a color management system
A complete demonstration of the CMS package will be presented. Profiling from the input source to the press will be introduced including monitors, proofs, printers, scanners and digital cameras. Audience interaction will be encouraged as this live presentation builds the foundations of the CMS.
  • Review and Discussion—open forum

Day 2 - Begin 8:30am
8:30     Continental Breakfast - Clemson University
8:45     Applied Color Management
  • Hands On Activities
In this day-long open lab, symposium participants are assigned teams to characterize offset and flexographic printing presses as well as a variety of proofing devices. Each team will create and apply profiles and produce proofs and production printing in this intensive, full-day, hands-on laboratory experience. Participants will gain practical experience and be actively involved in all aspects of the colorimetric workflow in "real time".
5:00     Social Hour, Madren Center
Open Evening

  • Applied Color Management - Evaluation
Proofs and product from the previous day’s laboratory experiences will be evaluated and discussed to identify color management and process control issues.
  • Verifying Profiles
How to ensure your profiles are correct.
  • Vector Color/Raster Color
The challenges of spot colors in a color managed workflow will be addressed.
  • RIPS: A Primer
