We strive to find better treatments for human diseases by fostering interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers and enhancing interdependent intellectual capital and resources within the state of South Carolina.

The center comprehensively mentors target investigators toward independence as NIH-funded researchers in regenerative medicine and recruits outstanding junior and senior investigators in regenerative medicine.

Three main cores of the center focus on: Seven current SCBioMat research projects, including two pilot projects, dedicated to tissue regeneration research are:
  1. Stem cell-myocyte electrical coupling via a laser patterned cell bridge
  2. Biomaterials for guided neural regeneration
  3. Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Atherosclerotic Plaque Failure
  4. Enabling technology for brain tissue regeneration after stroke
  5. Mechanically guided urological tissue regeneration in vitro
  6. Improved reactor control for stem cell expansion to meet therapeutic needs
  7. Nanoparticles for targeted delivery of neuroprotective antioxidant enzymes to CNS
