vaccine: prevents varicella (chickenpox)
- Varicella vaccine is a 2 dose vaccine. You
should get the vaccine if you have never had chickenpox. If you are unsure, you
can have a titer drawn to check for immunity.
- What is
varicella? Varicella zoster virus causes chickenpox, a very contagious
virus spread through cough, sneeze, or by touching blisters on the skin.
Typical symptoms of chicken pox include itchy rash with blisters, tiredness,
headache and fever. It is usually mild, but can lead to severe skin infections,
pneumonia, encephalitis or even death. Chicken pox mostly affects children.
- Adults are 25 times more likely to die from chickenpox than children.
