Use of EPDM Rubber as Lightweight Backfill for Retaining Walls

The objective of this study is to determine the geotechnical properties of shredded roof membrane-sand mix for potential application as lightweight fill. Standard geotechnical engineering laboratory tests were conducted to measure the properties of pure shredded roof membrane and membrane-sand mixture. The properties that were determined to be essential to a soils ability to act as fill were the particle size, dry density, shear strength, and the permeability of a soil. The laboratory tests utilized to determine these properties include sieve analysis, dry unit weight with and without compaction, permeability test, direct shear test and constant head permeability test.
