The Rubberized Asphalt Process

Collected
Ground
Scrap tires are collected by tire processors.
The tires are ground and all metals and fibers are removed.

Bagged
Labeled
The crumb rubber is packaged in 2,000-lb. supersacks and shipped to the contractor's asphalt plant.
Each supersack is labeled with its exact weight and other pertinent information.
 
Lab Blending
Mix Design
Rubber-modified liquid asphalt binder is made for the mix design in the lab by blending crumb rubber with unmodified binder.
The mix design is performed by ARTS staff using SCDOT Superpave Mix Design procedures.

Hot Mix Asphalt Plant
Blending Unit
Little or no modifications are required at the contractor's asphalt plant.
The blending unit is utilized to make rubber-modified asphalt binder at the asphalt plant.

Pumping
Dumping
The blending unit is connected to a tanker that pumps unmodified liquid asphalt binder into the blender.
Rubber is added to the liquid asphalt binder.

Blending
Viscosity Testing
Rubber-modified liquid asphalt is blended and pumped into the hot mix asphalt plant. The entire process takes about 45 minutes and makes approximately 6,500 gallons of rubber modified asphalt binder per batch.
ARTS staff performs quality control viscosity testing on the rubber-modified liquid asphalt at the hot mix asphalt plant during production.

Testing Hot Mix Asphalt
Paving
The contractor's lab technician performs quality control testing using SCDOT procedures on the rubber-modified hot mix asphalt at the plant during production.
Rubber-modified hot mix asphalt is placed on the road using standard paving equipment.

Compaction
Finished Pavement
Steel wheel rollers are recommended, but rubber tired rollers may be used for finish rolling.
Rubberized Asphalt Pavement is generally more durable than conventional asphalt pavement.
