Clemson University Wordmark

William A. Fowler and Donald Clayton examine the first copy of Clayton's textbook in Clayton's office at The Institute of Theoretical Astronomy in July 1968. Principles of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis was published by McGraw-Hill and was to have a great impact on the teaching of nuclear astrophysics for decades. This book was reissued by University of Chicago Press in 1983 after McGraw-Hill discontinued it. Clayton had chosen to publish this book on fundamentals in preference to accepting the invitation from Fowler and Hoyle to write a monograph with them as coauthors. A considerable amount of nuclear material was borrowed from Fowler's lectures at Caltech in 1957, when Clayton was in Fowler's Nuclear Physics course. They here laugh over some of the borrowed material.
