Donald Clayton and Fred Hoyle climbing the Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend National Park on November 17, 1973. Hoyle was concluding his research visit to Rice University with his favorite escape from human affairs, mountain hiking. One week previously Clayton and Hoyle had submitted their pathbreaking paper "Gamma ray lines from novae" to ApJ (187, L101 (1974)). Clayton later used this very trail as setting for his novel "The Joshua Factor" (Texas Monthly Press 1985) about a solar neutrino experiment in the Big Bend.
