William A. Fowler and Donald Clayton at Kings College sherry party during the Conference THE NEUTRON AND ITS APPLICATIONS, which was held in Cambridge to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Chadwick's discovery of the neutron there. Clayton's paper "The Neutron and the Universe" was presented on this occasion Sept 15, 1982. Fowler's sabbaticals in Cambridge in 1956 and 1961 were pivotal for the development with Hoyle of the science of nucleosynthesis. During his 1961 sabbatical Clayton at Caltech was writing his mathematical analysis of the s process, which quantified concepts of it within BBFH 1957 review. Fowler and Clayton lived almost 1/3 time in Cambridge during the years of Hoyle's IOTA 1967-72. Clayton began nucleosynthesis work with Fowler in 1957 on neutron capture chanins and cross sections. His 1961 PhD thesis was the first in pure nuclear astrophysics, and featured the neutron.
