Edwin Salpeter and Donald Clayton in Clayton's office at Rice University on April 14, 1983. On this date Salpeter delivered the Marlar Memorial Lecture "Galaxy Clusters and Invisible Mass in the Universe". Here they examine the just published ESSAYS IN NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS, eds. Barnes, Clayton, Schramm (Cambridge Univ Pres 1982). Clayton's ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNALS form the backdrop, sequence marked in the fashion of Willy Fowler, whom this book celebrated. In 1983, after his Nobel Prize, Fowler said to Clayton "I think that book may have put me over the top." He was wrong of course; his own work put him over the top. Salpeter contributed the original essay "3He, red dwarfs, and our next trillion years" to that book.
