John Faulkner, Jim Kurfess and Donald Clayton at Schloss Ringberg on Sept. 29, 1999, for the Conference "Astronomy with Radioactivities". Faulkner and Clayton became friends at the beginning of Hoyle's Institute in Cambridge. (See 1967 IOTA Staff photo). As one of Hoyle's Cambridge students, Faulkner was asked to write a News & Views account of the conference in Venice for Hoyle's 60th birthday in Nature 256, 535, (1975). See 1975 photos of that conference on this site. Kurfess is Principal Investigator for the OSSE instrument on Compton Gamma Ray Observatory; Clayton is Co-I on the same instrument. (See 1992 Discovery of 57Co photo). This workshop was organized by Roland Diehl for Max Planck Extraterrest. Phys. The goal was to examine all aspects of use of radioactivity in astronomy, with special emphasis on gamma-ray lines. Kurfess spoke there on "Prospects for a high-sensitivity Compton telescope", looking ahead to a next instrument after COMPTEL. Clayton spoke on "Condensation of Radioactivities in Supernova Interiors". Both papers can be found in the Proceedings (ed. Diehl, MPIf.Extr.Phys.).
