Brad Meyer and Don Clayton in Sedona AZ for the conference on nuclear astrophysics at high T and low lifetime (Aug. 8-14, 1999). Meyer's talk "Is neutron richness necessary for an r process?" answered that question surprisingly in the negative. Understanding of the hierarchy of quasiequilibrium provides the key to understanding surpising features such as this. Meyer, Krishnan and Clayton at Clemson published two landmark papers of this cluster hierarchy clarifying both the origin of 48Ca and of r-process seed nuclei in the neutron-rich alpha-rich freezeout (ApJ 462, 825 (1996) and ApJ 498, 808 (1998)). Meyer began work on the r-process as a Rice University senior thesis project with Clayton in 1982-83. Photo by Nancy Clayton.
