Donald Clayton and Bernard Pagel in June 1968 in the gardens of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceaux Castle, Sussex. This day began a three-decade friendship between these two centered on issues of nucleosynthesis and the abundance evolution of the galaxy. The RGO would remain in the Sussex castle for only a few more years.
