Dr. Jaehyung Ju worked as a research associate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University for three years since 2008. Dr. Ju is not a faculty member at the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE) at the University of North Texas (UNT) as an Assistant Professor from 2011 fall semester. Before he joined Clemson design group, Dr. Ju had worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University-Kingsville for one year (2007-2008) and a postdoctoral researcher at Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) for two years (2005-2007). He received Ph.D. degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University-College Station in 2005 on experimental and computational mechanics of composite materials and structures. Before he came to the United States, he had worked as Research Scientist at CAD/CAM research center of Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) for 5 years (1996-2000) and Lecturer at Dongyang Technical University for one year (1999-2000).
His research areas are mechanics and design of multifunctional materials and structures; compliant cellular materials, electro-active materials, and non-pneumatic tires while focusing on energy efficiency and energy harvesting. He has published about 50 refereed journal articles and conference proceedings in the area of mechanics, design and structural dynamics of composites, cellular materials, sandwich structures, electro-active materials, and non-pneumatic tires. He has filed four US patents as a main inventor on non-pneumatic tire components with cellular materials while collaborating with Michelin.
He is serving as technical committee and session organizer of i) tire and wheel technology of SAE World Congress, ii) advanced vehicle and tire technology of ASME-IDETC, and iii) composite and heterogeneous materials of ASME-IMECE. He is also serving as an editorial board member of Modern Mechanical Engineering (MME).

Mechanics and Design of Multifunctional Materials and Structures – Electro Active Polymers, Piezoelectric Ceramics, Cellular Materials, Composites and Sandwich Structures
My research not only focuses the fundamental mechanics of materials and structures (static/dynamic stress analysis, nonlinear material modeling, contact stress, fracture, fatigue, impact, noise, and vibration) but also covers the applications shown below while considering specific design requirements:
- Automotive – Fuel efficient design of pneumatic and non-pneumatic tires(see TWEEL)
- Aerospace – Multifunctional composite sensors and actuators, morphing design with compliant cellular solids, vibration and noise attenuation, high temperature materials and structures
- Civil – Energy harvesting pavement design with electro active polymer geomembranes
- Biomedical - Artificial disk with flexible cellular materials
