"The Wii Experience" 2009 - Link to More Details and Pictures from 2009

Girl Scouts Engineering Day is a one day event for Gir Scouts sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program at Clemson University. In the Electrical and Computer Engineering class we analyzed how the Wii Remote operates to sense position and acceleration. We will briefly play Wii Tennis and observe how the Wii Remote works with the game. Unlike standard game controllers, the Wii Remote, “wiimote”, can sense the movement and position of the player’s arm. We will then investigate the technology that makes the Wii Remote game controller able to sense this motion. We will understand the term “acceleration” and show how the Wii Remote measures accelerations to sense arm movements. We will use the Wii Remote to directly measure acceleration when we jump. We will learn about the tiny, special, infrared, camera that works with the sensor bar to measure arm positions. We will use the Wii Remote to measure distance. We will make a web page that explains our results. We will see topics from Electrical and Computer Engineering such as electric circuits, infrared LEDs, camera vision, and accelerometers.

Project WISE is a one-week residential camp for rising 8th grade girls sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program at Clemson University. In the Electrical and Computer Engineering class this summer we built and analyzed a solar powered robot. Construction of the robot demonstrated topics from Electrical and Computer Engineering such as electric circuits, electric motors, light, batteries, robot motion, solar cells and energy conversion.. Each student built a robot that she took home with her at the end of the week.
