Course Description

This one-day course is intended to give non-engineering professionals a better understanding of electric power systems planning, operations and regulatory frameworks.  Basic electrical terminology and concepts are explained in simple to understand terms with regard to design, construction, operations and maintenance of power plants substations and transmission and distribution lines.  Basic electrical safety concepts are included.  New information on Solar and Wind power has been added to the course.

The 2009 IEEE Tutorial - “Power Systems Basics for Non-Engineering Professionals” and CUEPRA Summer Meeting will be held at SCE&G facilities located just off 12th Street in Cayce, South Carolina.

 The tutorial will be held at the SCE&G Operations Support Center on Thursday, July 16, 2009, and the CUEPRA meeting will be held at the same location on Friday, July 17, 2009.  The physical address is 220 Operation Way.  Please see the attached maps for additional details.  Access to the building is via a guard gate at 12th Street and Old Taylor Road.  The names of those confirmed to attend both meetings will be placed at this guard gate. 

Once past the guard gate, please go the front entrance of the building, and the guard will direct you to your meeting.  The tutorial and CUEPRA meeting will be in conference room 163 of the Operations Support Center.

 A block of 10 rooms has been reserved at the Hampton Inn at 822 Gervais Street in Columbia.  The deadline to secure a reservation is Monday, June 15, 2009.  The block will expire after this date.  The rate is $129 and does not include taxes.  Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance to avoid a penalty.  Request group code CUE.  The hotel’s local number is (803) 231-2000.
