Suyi Li joined the department in 2016 following appointments as postdoctoral research fellow at University of Michigan. His research is directed towards developing multi-functional structures that can autonomously alter their configurations and mechanical properties in response to external stimuli or control commands. To achieve this goal, he take inspirations from various examples in nature and art, such as plant species that are capable of rapid movements, and the rich topologies in origami paper folding. Lessons from these examples guide him to exploit the intricate relationships between the geometric forms and functionalities, and synthesize smart structures with programmable and adaptive properties for automotive, aerospace, architecture and many other applications.
