FAQs & Myths

FAQs

How do I apply to study abroad?

Click here to learn about the process.

What courses should I take abroad?

For several of our programs, we have a set list of courses that are normally offered, based on your major. If you are going through Global-E3, the main Study Abroad Office or independently, discuss your options with your academic advisor in your department.

Will credits and grades transfer

Grades do not always transfer, but credits do. Depending on your situation, you may need to complete a coursework approval form before you leave. We will let you know if you need to do this step.

Can I do an internship during/after my experience?

We can assist you in setting up internship opportunities that complement your studies or if you desire to do just an internship, practicum or co-op abroad. If you are abroad and discover an opportunity, inform us about it and we may be able to make an arrangement, given the circumstances.

Will my financial aid carry over?

For either college or university sponsored semester-long and year-long programs, the answer is yes. Summer programs tend to be different, though certain non-Clemson scholarships may still be transferable. To discuss financial aid matters, please call financial aid at 656-2280 and visit the Financial Aid website.

Are there scholarships available?

While the college does not presently offer scholarships, there are third-party organizations and companies that may offer assistance.  For example, students going to Germany should check out DAAD for a variety of scholarship opportunities.  Additional scholarships may be available from private companies, governmental sources, and the academic institution itself.  A internet search should be able to turn up some options. And, of course, be sure to ask your academic advisor and your co-op/internship employer, as well as the CoES Undergraduate and International Studies office.

I have more questions? Who do I talk to?

Stop by 107 Riggs Hall and speak with Jessica Pelfrey or Dr. Randy Collins for more information or assistance.

Myths

I can’t afford to go abroad.

Not true! Through Clemson’s programs, you’ll pay CU tuition and you may be able to apply scholarship or financial aid dollars to your experience. In fact, out-of-state tuition is often waived for non-resident students.  In addition, extra scholarships are out there through Global-E3 and other non-profit organizations. As far as cost of living, most countries are on par with living expenses with the U.S. In terms of airfare, it is increasingly affordable to fly to various destinations. Check out www.studentuniverse.com/ or www.statravel.com/ for student airfare discounts.

My department/advisor won’t let me.

We’d like to talk to him/her if that’s the case! Most faculty in CES are extremely supportive of students getting an international experience under their belt. If you’re unsure about it, ask your advisor for the honest truth.

I won’t graduate on time.

That’s not necessarily true. You’ll generally take a normal workload while abroad unless you have special circumstances. If they are approved ahead of time, all your credits should transfer seamlessly from your host institute to Clemson.

It’s not safe to study abroad.

Although the world has changed dramatically in the past few years, we’ve never had a major incident where students’ safety was in peril. Our programs are in safe locations with advisors on hand to assist in case of emergency.
