What are qualified tuition and related expenses?  Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition and fees a student must pay to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution excluding amounts paid for room and board, transportation, and recreation fees.

How Clemson reports:  Clemson University reports amounts of qualified tuition and related expenses billed to students during the tax year and scholarships/grants posted to the student's CU account during the tax year.

For the 2008 tax year, a student's 1098-T may include amounts from Spring 2008, Summer I & Summer II 2008, Fall 2008, and Spring 2009, depending on when the student registered for courses.  In most cases, a student will take advantage of early registration for the spring semester and a bill will generated in the November/December time frame.

Resources for parents/students:  Publication 970 (2008), Tax Benefits for Education can be found at http://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/index.html.  This publication contains detailed information on the tax benefits that may be available if you are saving for or paying education costs for yourself or, in many cases, another student who is a member of your immediate family.
