What are qualified tuition and related expenses? Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition and fees a student must pay to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution excluding amounts paid for room and board, transportation, health, and recreation fees.

How Clemson reports: Clemson University reports amounts of qualified tuition and related expenses billed to students during the tax year and scholarships/grants posted to the student's CU account during the tax year.

For the 2012 tax year, a student's 1098-T may include amounts from Spring 2012, Summer I & Summer II 2012, Fall 2012, and Spring 2013, depending on when the student registered for courses. In most cases, a student will take advantage of early registration for the spring semester and a bill will be generated in the November/December 2012 time frame.

Resources for parents/students: Please refer to the IRS Tax Benefits for Education Information Center for information on the tax benefits that may be available if you are saving for or paying education costs for yourself or, in many cases, another student who is a member of your immediate family.  Our office is not qualified to give students/parents tax advice.
