Community Pride, Inc. Revitalized
| Name | Angela Crouch | | Situation | Charleston County Community Pride, Inc. was founded in 1966 by Clemson University Extension Service. It is a program designed to create in every citizen, organization, business and government agency an awareness of the needs and concerns of the environment. Several years of being
without an agent to coordinate their efforts was beginning to take a
toll on this group and many expressed concern about Community Pride's future. | | Response | The county agent worked with the 24-member board of directors meeting with the board four times a year and monthly with various committees
(awards, logo, adopt-a-highway, etc.). The agent coordinated the Annual Community Pride Awards Luncheon held in the spring and facilitated raising funds of $2,000 for the event.
Many resources were put into promoting environmental improvement and beautification at various venues throughout the county including: James Island Charter High School Career Fair, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Earth Day Celebration, and the Sixth Annual Earth Day Festival in
Charleston County. | | Impact | To date, there is an active, strong board with no vacancies. The awards system has been revamped to include a contractor/developer award given to an outstanding contractor who employs best management practices that relate to protecting the fragile natural resources of the low country. A
new logo has been created and will be revealed at the 2007 awards
luncheon. Adopt-A-Highway coordinators will receive t-shirts as a "thank you" for their tireless efforts.
The 40th Annual Community Pride Awards Luncheon recognized over 20 individuals and groups that had made significant contributions to improving the environment in Charleston County. Two South Carolina Representatives and the Mayors of Charleston, North Charleston and Mount Pleasant were on hand to present awards and offer remarks. Local media covered the event. Articles in area newspapers reached over 131,000
people. |
