4-H Leaders Retreat

Name

Ellen T. Blanchard

Situation

Volunteers are the primary foundation to the 4-H Program. Many volunteers contribute countless hours to the local and state 4-H Youth Development programs and to the annual Southern Regional Leadership Forum in Georgia. In the 2005-2006 fiscal year, the state of South Carolina hosted the Southern Leadership Forum. The volunteer leaders planned and implemented the successful forum. The success of the forum is attributed to the countless and dedicated hours that the volunteers spent ensuring that every detail was covered and addressed adequately. The County Agent wanted to show the volunteer leaders that their involvement in the local program was and still is appreciated and needed to strengthen the overall state, regional and national levels.

Response

The 4-H Youth Development Program offered mini grants to help strengthen the South Carolina Youth Development Program. The County Agent wrote a grant to establish a volunteer managed, but agent supported, regional and state communication support network which will support and recognize volunteers locally. The County Agent received $1000 to invest in the initiation of the county program and one regional meeting. County Agents within the region were contacted to assist in the implementation of the program. Agents from Beaufort, Colleton, and Orangeburg counties agreed to participate in the Leaders Retreat that was held at Bob Cooper Leadership Center. The first and second trainings were held in Charleston with local volunteer leaders acting as hosts. A 4-H Volunteer Leaders Retreat was held at Bob Cooper Leadership Center. The agenda for the meeting consisted of a hands on team challenge course in which team members pushed beyond his or her own perceived limits. Two fun workshops were conducted: Food and Nutrition, Traditional Fun Activity and Global Positioning System. Extension Specialists updated volunteers about upcoming events at the Southern Leaders Forum, 4-H Programs, and South Carolina Operation Military Kids and the continued support from them.

Impact

During the retreat, Clemson agents and volunteers were able to identify key needs that will help implement a viable state 4-H Leaders Program. The volunteers suggested a newsletter that will reach across the state to help them network efficiently. Awards were given to the volunteer leaders to recognize their 4-H activities. 97% of the volunteer leaders in attendance state that the retreat impacted them positively on how they as volunteers can strengthen their involvement in the Youth Development Program in the county and state level.
