Bird ofParadise

Welcome to the Bird of Paradise Home page.   I have tried to compile information on this plant that is useful to the gardener trying to keep the plant growing and flowering in climates that are hostile to the Bird of Paradise.  The Bird of Paradise is one of four plants in the genus Strelitzia.  The plant most often referred to as the Bird of Paradise and the one pictured to the left is the orange flowering Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia reginae.  Below you will find the factsheets and other information I have been able to locate that are helpful in growing Bird of Paradise plants.  If you are trying to determine if you have one of the other species of Strelitzia then go to the link on "Bird of Paradise species".  Unfortunately I do not have any cultural information on the other species of Bird of Paradise besides the orange flowering one.

pointingfinger Here is a factsheet I put together on growing Bird of Paradise plants.

Dr. Richard Criley of the University of Hawaii Dept. of Horticulture explains why BOP sometimes fail to flower.

Here is an article from The International Society of Plant Propagators on pollinating  Bird of Paradise plants. It is really amazing.

The Bird of Paradise species page has pictures and brief descriptions of the various species of Bird of Paradise.
