Nutrition and Volunteerism
| Name | Robin Currence | | Situation | National studies by the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society have shown that some risk factors for heart disease and cancer can be reduced with healthy food habits. High cholesterol, blood pressure, and excess weight may be lowered by eating a variety of healthy foods, with an emphasis on those from plant sources, particularly fruits and vegetables. | | Response | A local 4-H volunteer became interested in the 4-H 5-A-Day Quiz Bowl as a method to teach youth the importance of eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables. She used information prepared by the state 4-H nutrition specialist and the local Family and Consumer Sciences agent to train several teams of youth for the contest in both 2002 & 2004. In the fall of 2004, she wrote and produced a PowerPoint presentation on the 5-A-Day Contest and presented it twice at the Southern Region 4-H Leader
Forum. Twenty adult volunteers took part in the workshops, and received information to take home so that they could start their own 5-A-Day programs. | | Impact | After participating in Extension programs, more than 75% of youth and adult participants indicated an increase in knowledge about the importance of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. The adult volunteers indicated increased knowledge of risk factor reduction for heart disease and cancer, and gained interest in starting their own 5-A-Day programs. |
