Establishing a County 4-H Teen Council
| Name | Robin Currence | | Situation | A county 4-H Teen Council can be of benefit to the local 4-H program in several ways. The Council can provide opportunities to teens that will keep them interested in 4-H past the elementary school years. It can also provide teens with leadership and community service opportunities. | | Response | After receiving training on establishing a county 4-H Teen Council, it was decided that one should be in place in Chester County. Using a list of teens who have been active in 4-H, invitations were mailed for an initial meeting. A core group of eight attended (which has been the average number at each meeting). At the first meeting, a project was announced for which the Teen Council would have responsibility - designing and decorating a monthly window display in an office in downtown
Chester. Participants were also told about upcoming opportunities for teens such as the 4-H Winter Retreat, Teen Weekend, community service projects, etc. | | Impact | The monthly window project gives focus to the group. They know they are responsibile for it, and it grounds each meeting. Since the teens enjoy working together, they have been very responsive to participation in other activities. They recently planned and staffed games at our county 4-H Fair. They have attended the Winter Retreat, Teen Weekend, are working on portfolios, and have assisted with community service projects. |
