On Septmenber 24, 1933, a group of young men from Charleston came
together to form a fraternal organization in order to establish a
fellowship among Charleston area students. To represent their ties to
the sea, they chose as their name Beta Sigma Chi--Brothers of the
Sea Coast. Because the college did not encourage social
fraternities at that time, Beta Sigma Chi was founded as a service
fraternity. Known also as the Charleston County Club, Beta Sigma Chi
sponsored dances and social events both in Clemson and Charleston for
the brothers. Since no other organizations existed, membership was
never a problem for Beta Sigma Chi. In 1957 social fraternities began to
appear on campus, resulting in competition for quality men. After 35
years as a regional fraternity, Beta Sigma Chi opened its ranks to all
male undergraduates in 1968.
The following year found Beta Sigma Chi petitioning the Interfraternity
Council for status as a social fraternity on Clemson's newly co-educational campus. Once
established as a member of the IFC, Beta Sigma Chi sought to become
affiliated with a national fraternity. The brothers wanted a national fraternity
which could provide support and supervision in maintianing a good
reputation and high standards.
On October 15, 1970, the brothers sent a letter to the CHI PSI Central Office stating
that the brothers of Beta Sigma Chi had unanimously voted to petition
for a charter from CHI PSI. In January 1971, Beta Sigma Chi
became a CHI PSI Colony at Clemson, and became a chapter of CHI PSI on
January 8, 1972.
Since its charting in 1972, our chapter has excelled on Clemson's
campus. To its credit, the chapter has achieved many accompishments at
Clemson University.
CHI PSI is one of the oldest national fraternities at Clemson University.
