Michael P. Scafuri
Archaeologist

Michael Scafuri holds an M.A. degree in Anthropology from the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University and a B.A. degree in Anthropology from Pennsylvania State University.  He has over fifteen years experience in archaeological survey and excavation around the world, including both terrestrial and underwater projects.

His underwater experience ranges from work on the 16th century Emanuel Point shipwreck in Pensacola, Florida in 1994 to the 10th century Byzantine shipwreck near Bozburun, Turkey from 1995 through 1999.   His work on the Byzantine project also marked the beginning of his focus on computer graphics, mapping, and the digital integration of archaeological data.

Scafuri joined the H.L. Hunley project in August of 2000 as a staff archaeologist and has been actively involved in the raising, excavation, and analysis of the H.L Hunley submarine.  He is a specialist in computer applications to archaeology and has spearheaded the scanning, mapping, and digital modeling of the H.L. Hunley, its artifact assemblage, and the remains of the crew.
