John C. Pinckney ’49
Fall 2005
Agricultural engineering
graduate John C. Pinckney has seen a lot of changes on U.S. 278,
the only artery to Hilton Head Island. In fact, he can recall when
it wasn’t even paved, much less a highway.
Pinckney has watched “progress” through the years both
as a native and resident of Bluffton and, for the last nine years,
as a member of the Southern Beaufort County Corridor Review Board.
He recently received a certificate of appreciation from the board for
his “historic perspective,” among many other contributions.
Pinckney joined the military after graduation, then farmed and worked
for the Army Corps of Engineers from 1972-1990. He also served in the
Army Reserve, retiring as a colonel. He served on the review board
from 1996 until his retirement this year.
