Legislative first
Nikki Randhawa Haley ’94
Spring 2007
Nikki Haley of Lexington has been extremely busy since
she earned an accounting degree at Clemson. For starters, she’s chief financial
officer of her family’s fine women’s apparel company and co-owner with
her husband of National Barter Co.
And she’s a legislator. In fact, she’s the first Indian American to hold
statewide-elected office in South Carolina and the first Republican Indian
American State legislator in the country. She’s currently in her second term
in the general assembly.
Haley was chairman of the freshman class and majority whip of the Republican
Caucus. She’s currently on the labor and insurance committees, serving on
the business and commerce subcommittee as well as the insurance subcommittee.
She recently received the Palmetto Leadership Award from the S.C. Policy
Council and the Strom Thurmond Excellence in Public Service and Government
Award by the S.C. Federation of Republican Women.
