Out of Africa

Summer 2007
Animal science graduate Gwynne Kinley, a U.S. Army captain and veterinarian,
recently found herself in the Horn of Africa, very far from her Hilton Head
roots.
She conducted an all-female veterinary project with the Combined Joint Task
Force — Horn of Africa military team in Yemen. Armed with syringes of multivitamins,
she and other U.S. military women laid the foundation for a healthier populace
on the small island of Socotra through an intense training program developed
specifically for the women inhabitants.
The new skills will help the Yemeni women improve the country’s overall livestock
health and productivity and prepare them to educate others villagers.
The
all-women team created a comfortable and culturally acceptable environment
for the Yemeni women.
