Kelsy Byrd, Head CounselorHello future Eurekans! My name is Kelsey Byrd, I am a Packaging Science major from Greenville, SC, and I have the awesome privilege of being your head counselor this summer. The main reason I chose to participate in EUREKA! was because it was a huge step outside my comfort zone, and if high school taught me anything, it’s that our best and most memorable experiences happen when we put ourselves in such situations. Spending an entire month with 35 complete strangers in one of the greatest places in the country turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Less than a week in to my EUREKA! summer, I knew I wanted to help facilitate that same experience for future Eurekans. I look forward to making this summer a memorable and impactful one for a very lucky group of freshman honor students and, most importantly, introducing them to the many things distinctly Clemson that make this place so special. White water rafting, frequent trips to Y Beach, late night Cookout runs, and a drive or two down Rollercoaster Road are among the many things I can’t wait to share with y’all this summer. If you need a little more convincing, have questions about anything at all, or have no clue what Packaging Science is, please feel free to email me at kmbyrd@g.clemson.edu. I’d love the opportunity to make this a summer you’ll never forget. |

Jacob Dworkin, CounselorHi, my name is Jacob Dworkin, I am a Chemical Engineering major from Amherst, NH. Eureka! is one of the best experiences the Calhoun Honors College offers. Arriving over the summer allows you to gain familiarity with the campus and make many new friends. The experience in undergraduate research is also valuable, it gives you a chance to explore your potential major or another topic of interest. For my research last summer I was able to build a lithium battery from start to finish, this research led to me getting a paid research position on campus. Even with the time spent researching we will still have many opportunities to hang out, take late night fast food runs, swim in Lake Hartwell and go on some awesome trips! Being on campus over the summer is super relaxing, we almost have it to ourselves. Feel free to email me at jdworki@clemson.edu with any questions, I can't wait to meet all the future Eurekans.

Zack Hewitt, CounselorHey! My name is Zack Hewitt and I’m an Electrical Engineering major from Spartanburg, South Carolina. In addition to studying Engineering, I am also minoring in Japanese. My three favorite activities include video games, saxophone improv, and traveling around the world. I participated in EUREKA! last summer, and I would easily say that it was the best summer of my life. During EUREKA! I had a great experience working with my research team, and I was proud of how much I learned and accomplished during the summer, but I also met some incredible people who have become some of my best friends. Going into the program I wasn’t sure if it was going to be worth giving up half of the summer, but after it began I lost all of my doubts and I was extremely glad that I took the opportunity. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to send me an email at zhewitt@clemson.edu. I look forward to hearing from you and to having another awesome summer! |
Dr. Michael Sehorn is an Assistant Professor in the Genetics and Biochemistry Department. His research subject area is "Cancer, DNA Repair." The project title of his research is "Isolation and Characterization of a DNA repair protein." Professor Sehorn's project will be a valid means for teaching research methods. The research intern will learn many techniques during their research experience. They will be directly involved in the research, and depending on the experiment or activity, the intern will work individually or as a team with graduate students and Dr. Sehorn. No previous experience, skills, or knowledge is required to perform research in his lab. He offers an invitation for the student to continue the project they started for the duration of their four year tenure at Clemson University.
Read below what Dr. Sehorn says about EUREKA!
"The EUREKA! program provides incoming students with the opportunity to get a head start on their scientific careers through research. This is a valuable opportunity for students that have aspirations of attending a medical, dental, law, graduate or some other postgraduate school. These schools are looking to discern between the truly superior students and the exceptional students. Because the difference between the two groups of students is usually not with the student's GPA, anything a student can do to distinguish themselves from their peers will help them with their applications to postgraduate schools. The EUREKA! program is a step in the right direction toward this goal. As a research intern, the student is exposed to laboratory techniques and procedures they would not normally experience. If the student wishes to continue their research throughout their tenure at Clemson University, it is highly likely that the results from the student's research will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Lastly and probably most important, the student gains a mentor early in their undergraduate studies. The benefit of this relationship manifests in the letter of recommendations that is often the deciding factor in acceptance to any postgraduate school."
