Made possible by a gift from the Clemson Class of 1940, the Douglas W. Bradbury Award recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the Honors Program. The award includes a plaque and a $1,000 professional development allowance.
Nominations may be made by senior students in the Honors Program, faculty and department chairs or other academic administrators. Nominations are to be submitted to collegiate Deans by Friday, March 3, 2006.
Nominations are initially screened by the Calhoun College Committee of each College or, in the absence of such a committee, by an ad hoc faculty committee appointed by the Dean. In support of their candidacy, nominees are asked to submit the following materials to their college committees:
- a brief statement acknowledging and accepting the nomination.
- a current curriculum vitae.
- a statement of no more than two pages summarizing the nominee's involvement in and service to the Honors Program.
- a sample honors course syllabus.
- no more than three supporting letters, at least two of which must be from honors students*.
*When notified of his or her nomination for the Bradbury Award, the nominee is asked to contact the Honors Director with the names of persons the nominee wishes to submit letters on his or her behalf. The Honors Director will then contact the letter writers with instructions to submit their letters directly to the appropriate college screening committee. Nominees are asked not to solicit or directly receive letters written in their behalf.
These materials are due in the Dean's office by February 24, 2006. It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure that the nominee is informed of the need to submit these items by the stated deadline.
Each college is permitted to make up to two nominations to the Calhoun College Committee, which shall select the recipient of the award. The nominations of the colleges are due in the Honors Office, 105 Tillman Hall, by Friday, March 3, 2006.
In evaluating nominees, collegiate screening committees are asked to consider factors such as
- involvement in the development and teaching of Honors courses.
- involvement as Honors thesis/project advisor.
- service on departmental, collegiate and/or University honors committees.
- service to Honors students as mentor/advisor.
In making the final selection, the Calhoun College Committee gives preference to candidates who exhibit breadth and depth in the above areas. If in the judgment of the Calhoun College Committee none of the nominees meet these criteria, no award shall be made. The presentation of the Douglas W. Bradbury Award will be made at the General Faculty Meeting and at the Honors Program Spring Awards Ceremony.
