In keeping with the nation's interest in increasing the number and quality of scientists and engineers, the Department of Defense provides post-graduate fellowships to support study and research related to national defense needs. In addition to supporting graduate study in traditional science and engineering fields, DOD is interested in interdisciplinary areas such as acoustics and nanosciences. The fellowship is portable, allowing the recipient to pursue graduate study leading to a doctoral degree at any accredited U.S. institution. The award covers full tuition and fees, plus a stipend of $24,500. Approximately 2009 awards are made annually.
Eligibility. The DOD Graduate Fellowship Programs are open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible to apply. NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study in science or engineering. Applicants must receive their baccalaureate degrees by Fall 2009.
Application Procedure. Applicants may obtain the necessary forms from the American Society for Engineering Education website (see below). A complete application includes the Master Personal Information Form; official transcripts; three Reference Evaluations; and Graduate Record Examination scores (general test only).
Selection Criteria. Applications are evaluated by disciplinary panels matched to the science or engineering fields of the applicants' preferred graduate programs. Awards are made on the basis of merit and all available evidence of academic ability.
