 James F. Byrnes Collection

James F. Byrnes (1879 - 1972) was a South Carolina politician. His accomplishments included service as a Congressman and Senator for the state. Also, he was a Supreme Court justice and bureaucrat in the Roosevelt war administration. He was Secretary of State at the beginning of the Cold War. He ended is career as Governor of South Carolina.

Strom Thurmond Collection

Strom Thurmond (1902 - 2003) was one of the longest serving Senators in U.S. History. He served the state of South Carolina as a legislator, judge and Governor. In addition to long service in the Senate he was a World War II veteran in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Benjamin Tillman

Benjamin Tillman (1847 - 1918) was the South Carolina politician most responsible for the founding of Clemson University. Serving both as a Governor and Federal Senator he championed the causes of rural farmers and aided the creation of state-wide agricultural interests.
