Campus Safety
Emergency Communication

In an emergency, notification would begin immediately and may use one or all of these components:

Text and email messages

Cell-phone users can receive text messages in the event of an emergency by signing up here. The messages will be brief and will be activated by Clemson University emergency dispatchers. All campus email users will also receive brief email messages regarding the emergency. Further information will be posted online at www.clemson.edu/cusafety when it becomes available.

The University has determined that the following situations may require sending emergency messages:

  • Imminent danger, including a major fire or shooting
  • Imminent disaster, including an earthquake or flood
  • Severe weather, including tornado and lightning warnings

Additionally, the system may be used to alert the campus of major interruptions of campus operations, such as snow closings.

Sign up to receive emergency alerts on your cell phone:

  • Log into MyCLE (the Blackboard Academic Suite) with your user ID and password.
  • In the section labeled "CU Applications and Web Sites" click on the Ubiquity Message Manager (ClearTXT) link.
  • Fill in the information about your cell phone and submit.

Warning sirens

Clemson University tone and voice-message outdoor sirens are located at Memorial Stadium, Byrnes Hall and the band practice field on Perimeter Road. These sirens are intended to warn people outside campus buildings of impending severe weather and other emergencies. They may not be heard throughout campus and inside buildings.

In an emergency, the sirens will sound a tone and a brief voice message announcing the nature of the emergency.

Oconee Nuclear Station warning sirens serve a 10-mile zone around the station north of Seneca. These sirens, located at various locations on campus and throughout the Clemson/Seneca communities, are used to notify citizens of a variety of events that may occur at the station. For more information see Duke Energy's emergency preparedness page.

When the sirens are activated, do not attempt to immediately evacuate the area. Go to www.clemson.edu/cusafety or tune in to local media for details before taking action.

Inside Alerts

Campus email addresses also receive Inside Alerts when there is an emergency situation. These are sent by the Office of News Services and contain more information about the emergency than the initial emergency alert and instructions about what actions you should take.

Weather warnings

Tornado warnings are issued by the National Weather Service when a tornado is approaching the area. (See severe weather for more information). Campus warning sirens will sound a tone and a voice warning that a tornado is approaching and people should take shelter immediately. Alerts will also be sent via text messages, email alerts and desktop pop-up windows.

Lightning warnings are issued by Skyguard when lightning is reported to be within six miles of campus. (See severe weather for more information). Warning sirens sound a tone and a voice warning that lightning is nearby and people who are outside should take cover. Alerts will also be sent via text messages, email alerts and desktop pop-up windows.
