4-H Teens Speak Out on Obesity
| Name | Gloria Springs | | Situation | Teens today are more over weight than ever. Studies show that this generation will not live as long as their parents if they do not change their eating habits. Several teens at Dorchester County District Four high school saw this as being a major problem that needed to be addressed. | | Response | With the help of the county Extension agent and the home economics teacher, several students who are 4-H members and Future Career and Community Leaders, decided to offer an information/health fair addressing the obesity epidemic. The main objective of the fair was to make their fellow students aware of the serious health issues associated with being
overweight. To accomplish this, 4-H and FCCL set up display booths and activity stations in the schools gymnasium. Five tables were set up which displayed information on causes and prevention of obesity, portion control, fats and sugars in foods teens commonly eat, a fat analyzer, and an area for students to participate in various physical fitness activities such as push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and arm circles. FCCL and 4-H members manned each table, provided information and answered questions. | | Impact | The information/health fair was a big success. Over 600 students and teachers participated. 91% of the students reported knowledge gained, 75% reported they would increase physical fitness activities. 83% liked the physical fitness activities best; 69% reported they would make better food choices. All teachers who participated reported they thought the fair was needed, it was a great idea and they gained knowledge. The information presented was beneficial to them as well. Nine students had the opportunity to present their display at the annual FCCLA conference where they won first, second and third place. They will travel to California and present their information on the national level. |
