Economics in Law - Mark D. Wasserman

"I graduated with a degree in Economics from Clemson University in 1982 and continued my work to obtain a Masters degree in Economics from the University in 1983. After leaving Clemson I attended and graduated from Emory University School of Law in 1986. I have been practicing in Atlanta since 1986, and since 1987 have been with the law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP. My practice is focused in the business transactions and securities areas and I currently serve on the firm's executive committee.I believe that my undergraduate and graduate work in economics provided the perfect stepping stone for law school and the practice of law. Although I may not remember every micro or macro economics principle studied 20+ years ago, I do utilize on a daily basis the critical thinking skills that I learned as part of my economics curriculum. At its core, the study (and to some extent the practice) of law is really nothing more than a careful and creative application of rules and precedents to a particular fact situation. The analysis of scarcity and the working of markets is similar in many ways and the skills learned in economics training are easily transferrable to the law. In addition, there is also a very rich tradition of law and economics scholarship directly applying economic theories to the law, an area in which Clemson's faculty has always taken a leading role. I believe that any student considering a career in the law will be well served with an undergraduate degree in economics."
