Bamberg Poetry Project

Promptly after the exam week of Spring 2015 came to a close, Cohort A began their second year immersive project by traveling to Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School in Bamberg, SC. For their immersive experience Moore Scholars developed lesson plans that relayed the essential elements of poetry to prepare BEHS students for the culminating event; an open-mic poetry night themed “Finding Your Voice.” Kendrick Brown, a graduate of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High and now a Junior at Clemson University, joined Cohort A in the classroom.

As an Emerging Scholars program completer majoring in secondary education, Kendrick was a major constituent of the successful poetry project in Bamberg.

By collaborating with two ELA teachers at the high school, Cohort A was able to interact with and teach almost 100 BEHS students. With students, friends, family members, school personnel, and community members alike all in attendance to hear the voices of the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School students, the open-mic poetry night exemplified the supportiveness of the Bamberg community. Days before the final event the local radio station played an advertisement to invite the community to the open-mic poetry night and the BEHS culinary arts program provided refreshments and snacks to the audience.

While staying in Bamberg, Moore Scholars were also able to visit Richard Carroll Elementary School and the Shalom Zone Mission Cottage Inc. At Richard Carroll Elementary, a LeaderinMe primary school, the Moore Scholars interacted with students and teachers in a variety of classrooms from English to Special Education. The Shalom Zone Mission Cottage is a center that provides early childhood and after school care for youth in the community.


Flat Stanley Project

On November 6, 2014, 122 third graders from West End Elementary School in Anderson, SC visited campus to see the play, “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” at the Brooks Center. Following the play, the children moved to the Hendrix Center, where they met students enrolled in the Moore Scholars Program. The third graders were divided into small groups in which Moore Scholars taught them letter-writing lessons. Each student was given a Flat Stanley to take home. The students wrote their Moore Scholar a letter and designed their Stanley according to their own tastes. Some Stanleys were even tigers!

With the help of third grade teacher and Clemson alumnae Carlie Maute, the students mailed their letters and Stanleys to the Moore Scholars. The Moore Scholars then took the Stanleys on adventures all over the University and to the Clemson-USC game and to help cheer on the Tigers to a victory! Then, the Stanleys accompanied the Moore Scholars as they went home for the holidays, travelling to such far away places as Chicago. The Stanleys have now traveled back home to their children, accompanied by letters from the Moore Scholars telling of their wild adventures.


Multimedia Art Camp

The Moore Scholars Multimedia Art Camp is a one-week experience that takes place each summer right before the academic school year begins. K-12 students are invited to participate in a project based learning (PBL) experience that promotes the intrinsic motivation necessary to gain a deeper understanding of the subject they are studying whilst exploring real-world issues. Students will use creativity and critical thinking to generate civic engagement-themed projects that might include music videos, radio spots, commercials, art projects, short plays, and other works that incorporate 21st century technology. To date, the Moore Scholars program has served approximately 60 students through the Multimedia Arts Camp. For more information, please contact Angie Rogers at angelar@clemson.edu.


Greenville Early College Partnership

The Greenville Early College Program is a new program for middle school students in the School District of Greenville County and involves a partnership with Clemson University, Furman University, and USC Upstate. Its mission is to provide “college experiences, academic assistance, and acceleration for participants.” The Moore Scholars program has interacted with approximately 100 middle school students from GEC throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. This amount will grow to 140 GEC students for the 2015-2016 school year as GEC has now expanded to include 9th grade students.

Emerging Scholars Partnership

Moore Scholars have engaged in a collaboration with the Emerging Scholars program during the spring semester this year. Emerging Scholars is an outreach program in which students from some of the poorest districts in the I-95 Corridor of South Carolina attend summer classes at Clemson over three summers during their high school careers. This year, the Moore Scholars mentored Emerging Scholars both online and during two field trips to the low country to help develop an Emerging Scholars debate team. While in the Corridor, the Moore Scholars visited local elementary, middle, and high schools, and other community landmarks, such as hospitals and libraries. The Moore Scholars also participated in a simulation activity in a grocery store in which they had to make a grocery list based on a limited amount of income, while attempting to plan healthy meals for a family of four.
