What is an Accumulation Point?

Wherever hazardous wastes are collected or stored is an accumulation point. There are two type of accumulation points:

  • Satellite Accumulation Point - this is located at or near the site of generation, whether it's a laboratory, shop, or other process. Under DHEC regulations, you are allowed to accumlate up to 55 gallons of hazardous waste or one quart of acutely hazardous (P Listed) wastes. Once you've reached that limit, we have 3 days to move the waste from the satellite accumulation point.

  • Accumulation point - an accumulation point not located at the point of generation; typically a holding area prior to shipping. Under DHEC regulations, Clemson may only hold accumulated waste for 90 days. It then must be shipped for disposition. It takes special equipment and training to operate one of these so do not initiate one without contacting EH&S first.
