Held in October, Emeritus Day is an opportunity for emeriti to return to campus to visit with colleagues, learn about new programs, and hear about new happenings at the University. The half-day program concludes with a luncheon and faculty meeting.
One of our most popular events, Emeritus Night provides an opportunity for emeriti and their guests to see a production at the renowned Brooks Center for the Performing Arts on the Clemson campus. A reception precedes the event, which is usually held in February.
The Book Lovers Only Gambit is a twist to the classic book club discussion group. Held on the third Thursday morning in March, May, August and December at McClure's Bookshop in downtown Clemson, discussions are theme based and will delight even the novice bibliophile. Light refreshments are served.
This well attended "lunch 'n learn" type seminar takes place on the third Thursday in September, November, February and April at the New Super China Buffet on Tiger Boulevard in Clemson. After a Dutch lunch, participants are treated to an oral presentation on a hot topic by a member of the Clemson Family.
President and Mrs. Barker invite all emeriti to join current faculty and staff for the annual Holiday Reception held in early December at the Hendrix Center. The 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. reception offers a good opportunity for visiting and talking with Santa and Mrs. Claus!
Presented during Emeritus Day, this coveted award recognizes an outstanding emeritus whose contributions to academia, the University, the community and mankind have continued beyond retirement.
This award is presented to an individual, group or organization who has gone beyond the call of duty to help the Emeritus College attain its goals. The award is presented periodically.
Established in 2006, Friends is a designation given to those who support the Emeritus College through donations. All contributions are recognized by the Clemson University Foundation, and levels of recognition are consistent with foundation guidelines.
The primary means of communication to emeriti is the quarterly newsletter. The four-page publication is mailed in July, November, January and April. Copies are also available on this website.
Composed of approximately 25 emeriti, the board advises the director on all matters of the college. Board members are appointed and represent the diverse backgrounds of the emeriti. The term of office is two years. The board elects a chair and vice chair annually. Members of the board chair the various committees through which the work of the college is undertaken.
Composed of emeritus faculty who have served Clemson for 40 years or more, this group meets periodically with the University archivist to identify faculty, staff and students in old photographs.
The body includes American and Canadian university retirement organizations. Its purpose is to develop and enhance retirement organizations to serve their schools, individual retirees and the wider community. The Emeritus College has been of member of AROHE for four years and participated in the biennial meetings.
The Emeritus College has an excellent relationship with the United Way of Pickens County. To volunteer at the United Way office, help in the annual campaign, answer the 211 telephone line or assist in any other capacity, visit their website at http://www.uw-pc.org/.
The Clemson University Lifelong Learning Program is a membership organization that seeks to provide opportunities for continued learning and friendship through classes and activities enriching for adults. OLLI is continually looking for instructors to teach or assist with classes. More information may be obtained at www.clemson.edu/OLLI.
The Emeritus College International Opportunities Committee has worked diligently to facilitate travel abroad for emeriti. Although no formal program exists at this time, anyone interested in representing Clemson University overseas should contact Committee Chair Myles Wallace at myles@clemson.edu.
The Emeritus College has begun teaching a section of STS 102, Ideas, Machinery and Society. This course satisfies part of the General Education requirement. Several emeriti participate in teaching the course each semester as a contribution to the University.
There are sections of CU 101, a two-credit-hour course for freshmen, always in need of an instructor. All sections use a common syllabus and are limited to 19 students. There are several opportunities to assist with Freshman Orientation including the Summer Reading Program, One Clemson: Yours, Mine and Ours, and even "Move In" Day. For more information, contact the Emeritus College office.
